Our Story
The Wrench Drop was a concept by Sheldon Rogers, an Eagle Scout candidate, to commemorate the mechanics who settled in this area to repair the Conestoga Wagons after crossing the Susquehanna River. The first Wrench Drop occurred on December 31, 2004.
In 1792 The Trindle Spring Road (The Great Road) and Simpson Ferry Road (Road to Col. Simpson’s Ferry across the Susquehanna) were built passing through land that is now in our borough. The Conestoga Wagons followed these two roads and needed repairs as they approached what is now known as Mechanicsburg. The name Mechanicsburg began appearing around 1811/1812. Wagon mechanics began arriving in the area to repair the wagons and eventually set up shop along Trindle and Simpson Ferry Roads.
The Cumberland Railroad was incorporated in 1831. The railroad was completed from Lemoyne to Chambersburg in 1837 and eventually from Harrisburg to Virginia. The railroad was a boon to the thriving industry in Mechanicsburg causing the small village to grow. This growth included train facilities and the associated mechanics to maintain the facilities and the trains.
Today we have mechanics in Mechanicsburg who represent about every current occupation.
